A former University of Virginia administrator is spearheading an initiative to address a critical need within the Charlottesville area’s nonprofit sector: qualified **treasurers**. **Melody Bianchetto**, who concluded her tenure as the University’s vice president for finance in February 2023, is collaborating with **UVA Finance** and **UVA Academic Outreach** to prepare University employees for impactful volunteer positions on nonprofit boards of directors. This program aims to connect valuable skills with organizations often struggling to fill these essential roles. 

The impetus for this effort stemmed from Bianchetto’s direct involvement with local community organizations post-retirement. “One of the things I started doing as soon as I retired was spend more time with some community nonprofits,” Bianchetto explained. She quickly observed a recurring pattern: immediate placement into key financial roles.


## Addressing the Nonprofit Treasurer Shortage


Bianchetto recounted her experiences joining multiple boards, stating, “The first board I went on was **SARA** – the Sexual Assault Resource Agency – and I was immediately appointed treasurer.” This pattern continued with subsequent appointments as treasurer for **Madison House** and a position on the finance committee at **The Haven**. Recognizing a systemic issue, Bianchetto leveraged her understanding of the University’s talent pool to create a solution. 

She understood that many UVA employees possess the necessary budgetary and financial acumen, but may lack confidence or awareness regarding nonprofit board service. “I knew from working at UVA that there are a ton of people who have budget and finance expertise,” she said. “While they may be intimidated by the idea of being a treasurer for a nonprofit, they probably have the skills that they need.”

To build a sustainable pipeline of qualified volunteers, Bianchetto partnered with the area’s **Center for Nonprofit Excellence**. This collaboration resulted in the development of a specialized training regimen, including a December session titled “So you want to be a treasurer.”  She also initiated a monthly forum for nonprofit treasurers and engaged **Louis Nelson**, UVA’s vice provost for academic outreach, to broaden the program’s reach.

**Brian T. Ullman**, the senior manager of learning and impact for the Center for Nonprofit Excellence – and a UVA School of Education and Human Development doctoral graduate – emphasized the importance of the treasurer’s role. “Boards are important, and the treasurer in particular is a really important position,” Ullman stated. “They ensure the organization’s financial health is sustainable so it can fulfill its mission and are the board’s eyes and ears on finances. That’s a challenging position.”

Dubbed the **Amaterasu particle**, after the revered Japanese sun goddess, its initial detection occurred in 2021. This energetic particle possesses approximately 40 million times the energy of particles generated by the **Large Hadron Collider (LHC)**, the world’s foremost particle accelerator. 


## Investigating Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays


**Amaterasu** represents an example of a cosmic ray – highly energetic, charged particles traversing the cosmos at velocities approaching the speed of light. It currently ranks as the second most energetic cosmic ray ever recorded, trailing only the “**Oh-My-God**” particle, which was observed in 1991. The extreme rarity of these high-energy events motivates scientists to pinpoint their origins, which are theorized to involve the remnants of **supernova** explosions and the active cores of galaxies hosting **supermassive black holes**.


## New Insights into Amaterasu’s Potential Origin


A recent study led by **Francesca Capel** and **Nadine Bourriche** of the **Max Planck Institute for Physics** challenges the prevailing assumption that Amaterasu originated within the relatively empty expanse of the **Local Void**. Their findings suggest a more localized source for this extraordinary particle. “Our results suggest that, rather than originating in a low-density region of space like the Local Void, the Amaterasu particle is more likely to have been produced in a nearby star-forming galaxy such as **M82**,” stated **Bourriche**.

The team employed a sophisticated, data-driven methodology to retrace the potential trajectory of Amaterasu across the universe. Utilizing a three-dimensional statistical technique known as **Approximate Bayesian Computation**, they modeled the particle’s journey, accounting for the influence of interstellar magnetic fields. This method functions by comparing the outcomes of detailed, physics-based simulations with actual observational data to determine the most probable source locations.


## Mapping the Probable Source Locations


The analysis yielded a series of “probability maps,” all indicating potential origin points for Amaterasu situated beyond the boundaries of the Local Void. This research extends beyond simply identifying the source of this singular particle. It offers valuable clues regarding the cosmic events capable of accelerating particles to such immense energies, effectively functioning as cosmic ray “factories.” 

“Exploring ultra-high-energy cosmic rays helps us to better understand how the Universe can accelerate matter to such energies, and also to identify environments where we can study the behavior of matter in such extreme conditions,” explained **Capel**. “Our goal is to develop advanced statistical analysis methods to exploit the available data to its full potential and gain a deeper understanding of the possible sources of these energetic particles.” The team’s findings were published on January 28 in *The Astrophysical Journal*.

## Alma College Students Tackle Ecological Crisis with Synthetic Biology


A dedicated group of **Alma College** students has been diligently addressing a significant environmental threat – the proliferation of **White-Nose Syndrome** – within the confines of a Dow Science Center laboratory. This devastating fungal disease continues to decimate bat populations across North America, and the students have devoted the past year to researching potential solutions. Their innovative approach to tackling this ecological challenge recently garnered national recognition on an international stage. 

The team’s efforts culminated in a trip to Paris, France, where they competed in the 2025 **International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM)** Grand Jamboree. This annual event unites over 400 student teams globally, providing a platform to showcase cutting-edge research in the field of **synthetic biology**. The Alma College iGEM team was awarded a silver medal for their contributions. 

“It’s a remarkable accomplishment for a college of our size,” stated **Elie Schwarz**, the team’s faculty advisor. “Our students are competing at an international level, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with teams from major research universities. It shows the kind of hands-on, interdisciplinary science that Alma does best.” Schwarz believes iGEM perfectly embodies the benefits of a liberal arts education applied to scientific inquiry.


## Project “Com-bat-ting White-Nose Syndrome” and its Goals


This year’s iGEM project, aptly named “Com-bat-ting White-Nose Syndrome,” focuses on identifying novel strategies to mitigate the spread of the *Pseudogymnoascus destructans* fungus. First identified in New York in 2006, this pathogen has been responsible for the deaths of millions of bats, severely impacting ecosystem health. The Alma team’s ultimate objective is to engineer a biological system capable of fostering more resilient and thriving bat populations.

The project’s scope extends beyond laboratory experimentation, emphasizing the importance of ethical considerations and effective communication. According to Schwarz, iGEM challenges students to envision new possibilities within biology, demanding a holistic approach that encompasses ethics, accessibility, and community impact. Students from diverse academic disciplines – including biology, chemistry, computer science, art, and communication – collaborate to design, test, and disseminate their findings.


## International Collaboration and the iGEM Experience


In October, **Reagan Keyser**, a senior **biochemistry** major and president of the iGEM team, along with four teammates, presented their research at the Grand Jamboree in Paris. The event facilitated invaluable knowledge exchange with students from around the world, each addressing unique environmental, medical, or agricultural issues through genetic engineering. 

Keyser described the experience as “incredible,” highlighting the opportunity to learn from peers tackling similar challenges in diverse global contexts. She emphasized the realization of the field’s global reach and its immense potential for positive change. **Joey Colucci**, a senior computer science and mathematics major, co-led the team’s “Wiki” division, responsible for creating a comprehensive online platform documenting all facets of the project. 


## The Importance of Interdisciplinary Approaches to Science


Colucci underscored the critical role of communication in scientific endeavors, explaining that the team’s wiki serves as a central hub for all project information, ensuring accessibility for a broad audience. He noted that iGEM’s strength lies in its inclusivity, bringing together students with varied academic backgrounds. “We have people coding, people in the lab, people doing graphic design and community engagement. There’s something for everyone on this team,” he said. 

Schwarz added that synthetic biology is inherently collaborative, requiring creative thinkers, skilled communicators, and individuals capable of bridging the gap between scientific disciplines. He believes this collaborative environment is particularly well-suited to the atmosphere fostered at Alma College.
